This is a lightning detector that picks up the electromagnetic component of lightning strokes and lights up the marble for each stroke of lighting detected. The detector will pick up some lightning from more than 100 miles away, it is much more sensitive to local lightning. When a storm approaches the detector begins to flash much more often. The lightning detector will also respond to local electrical noise such as turning a light on, a refrigerator motor starting, cell phones held very close to detector, etc. The unit runs on standard 120VAC or 9V battery.
Video of this lightning detector in action: https://youtu.be/qGtb6EYQl6g
The video was taken before the unit was complete, The glass ball had not yet been soldered to the top of the box. Also, you can no longer see the flash in the stained glass base in the completed detector.
This lightning detector was made by Chuck Pound. Chuck I made the marble on a glass rod, the stained glass box, built all of the electronics, and designed and wound the pick-up coil. The unit resonates at about 11kHz. There is a clear window on one side of the stained glass box where you can see the pick-up coil and hand wired electronics.
